Graduation

I am officially a graduate! Graduation was at the cathedral on college green in Bristol, it was a really beautiful location. The day was lots of fun, with loud cheers for all the graphics graduates, followed by lots of champagne and hat throwing! It was sad to leave everyone, but it has been the best three years. Goodbye UWE.

Exciting Post!

Was very excited to come home from work the other day to find this beauty had come through the post. My friend Ellie had posted me a letter with little goodies inside! Her final major project had been about post and we wanted to continue it on. Mail art is so much more exciting and a really nice way to keep in contact now that I have moved away from bristol. My reply will have to travel from Turkey as I go on holiday today for two weeks!

Weekend in Brill

A couple of weeks ago I had a weekend off work to go and visit my friend Jennie in Brill. She loved her very belated birthday present, I had made flower bunting, see below. It was a really relaxing weekend in her cute little cottage like house. We made brownies and swan in the neighbors pool! I wish every weekend was as chilled out as that.

Kusudama Flower Bunting

I have started making paper flower bunting for my friend Jennie as a very belated birthday present. I came across this origami technique on Rox's blog. the flowers look so beautiful and are actually not that difficult to make. My mum and sister saw my flowers and couldn't resist having a go themselves! Follow the instructions on this website to make your own. http://foldingtrees.com/2008/11/kusudama-tutorial-part-1/

D&AD New Blood Festival

Last week was the D&AD New Blood Festival in Shoreditch. Ellie, Alice and Claire came to stay at my house in London and we went to see the exhibition and go to portfolio surgeries. I was lucky to get two portfolio sessions, with companies Lambie-Nairn, and Fudge. It was a really good experience, I was a little scared to show my portfolio at first as it is such a mess at the moment, but I was given really positive feedback and they all really liked my work. It has inspired my to tidy up my portfolio and update my website in order to look for some design work. UWE had its own stand in the exhibition which displayed a selection of our work. It was a good weekend and I went back again with my sister. I had collected so many business cards and publications by the end of the weekend!

Glastonbury!

This year was my first year at Glastonbury, and it was such an amazing experience! There was a big group of us that went, and I camped with Ellie and Alice. It was ridiculously muddy and wet in the first few days and the wellies were almost destroyed! But by the last few days it was so hot with beautiful blue skies, resulting in some rather stupid tan lines. My highlight had to be Beyonce on the sunday, what an amazing performance! I want to be back there already, but will just have to wait till 2013!

Toy Cameras

We recently bought this book as a birthday present for my friend Steph and once I got some birthday money for myself I couldn't resist buying myself a copy. I have been looking at photography so much recently as it was the main focus of my self directed study. This book celebrates tot cameras ability to produce creative and unusual photography. Im really excited to get my hands some some of the cameras listed and experiment myself!

Pulled: A Catalogue of Screen Printing

Last month I used my birthday money to buy a few books I had been keeping my eye on. The first was 'Pulled: A catalogue of screen printing". This is another of Mike Perry's books (he also did 'Hand Job', and 'Over & Over'). I had started to experiment more with screen printing in my last year of uni, and I love the process. This book is a collection of different designers, aiming to "remind us that there are some things you just can't achieve with digital printing."

Friday

Graphic Design Showreel 2011

A selection of moving image and interactive work from the third year Graphic Design students at UWE Bristol. Showreel edited by myself and Joe, music by aphex twin.

Monday

UWE Bristol Degree Show 2011

The UWE Bristol Degree show opened on Friday 10th June. The exhibition is up for a week, so if you are in the Bristol area please go and visit. There is such an amazing selection of work this year, I was really impressed with all the courses, not just Graphics. Below are a few photographs from the Graphics, Printmaking, Photography, Illustration and Drawing and Applied arts rooms.

Final Hand in

The final few weeks leading up to my last ever deadline were very difficult! The all-nighter just before was the hardest night ever, but I got all the work finished and handed in on time. So thats uni finished now! Three years have definitely flown by! I'm very jealous that my sister Sophie is about to start the same Graphics course at UWE. Its taken me a while to update this as I have been busy with the degree show and making a showreel.

Saturday

Pinhole Stop Motion

As part of my self directed study I attempted to make a stop motion animation using pinhole photography. This is something I haven't come across yet so thought it would be a challenge. I used my coca cola pinhole cans to take the photographs and had to photograph in the studio to get a clean white backdrop. This meant that the lighting was darker and I had to expose each photo for three minutes. This took all day in the studio, probably about eight hours. I then had to develop them in the darkroom, scan and edit them on the computer before animating them. It was an interesting experiment and I want to develop this idea further.

Camera Obscura Tent

Here are photos of the printed publication from the Camera Obscura Tent experiment. It explains the process behind the project and the unusual and quite unsuccessful attempts at photographing from inside the camera obscura. You can read the booklet in the previous post below.

Sunday

Camera Obscura Tent

Unfortunately my camera obscura tent project didn't go exactly to plan. I had many difficulties inside the tent photographing the projection, most images were way too under exposed and came out black. I did my best to edit them in photoshop but I didn't get much from them. Nobody will ever see what I saw inside the tent! Instead I have designed this publication to show my process behind the project.

Saturday

Flickbooks

I have made a series of flickbooks to support the prints from my motion in a single image project. http://rosieslade.blogspot.com/2011/05/motion-in-single-image.html
