UWE Bristol Degree Show 2011
The UWE Bristol Degree show opened on Friday 10th June. The exhibition is up for a week, so if you are in the Bristol area please go and visit. There is such an amazing selection of work this year, I was really impressed with all the courses, not just Graphics. Below are a few photographs from the Graphics, Printmaking, Photography, Illustration and Drawing and Applied arts rooms.
Final Hand in
The final few weeks leading up to my last ever deadline were very difficult! The all-nighter just before was the hardest night ever, but I got all the work finished and handed in on time. So thats uni finished now! Three years have definitely flown by! I'm very jealous that my sister Sophie is about to start the same Graphics course at UWE. Its taken me a while to update this as I have been busy with the degree show and making a showreel.

Pinhole Stop Motion
As part of my self directed study I attempted to make a stop motion animation using pinhole photography. This is something I haven't come across yet so thought it would be a challenge. I used my coca cola pinhole cans to take the photographs and had to photograph in the studio to get a clean white backdrop. This meant that the lighting was darker and I had to expose each photo for three minutes. This took all day in the studio, probably about eight hours. I then had to develop them in the darkroom, scan and edit them on the computer before animating them. It was an interesting experiment and I want to develop this idea further.

Camera Obscura Tent
Here are photos of the printed publication from the Camera Obscura Tent experiment. It explains the process behind the project and the unusual and quite unsuccessful attempts at photographing from inside the camera obscura. You can read the booklet in the previous post below.

Camera Obscura Tent
Unfortunately my camera obscura tent project didn't go exactly to plan. I had many difficulties inside the tent photographing the projection, most images were way too under exposed and came out black. I did my best to edit them in photoshop but I didn't get much from them. Nobody will ever see what I saw inside the tent! Instead I have designed this publication to show my process behind the project.

Flickbooks
I have made a series of flickbooks to support the prints from my motion in a single image project. http://rosieslade.blogspot.com/2011/05/motion-in-single-image.html

Black Squares
I decided to make a publication about the pinhole experiments from over the last semester. Where it took me a while to get used to the pinhole process, I quite often ended up with over exposed images. It became increasingly frustrating! I looked online for some pinhole quotes and used a few from the film 'The Brothers Bloom' and photographed all the black squares I had collected. I used The Newspaper Club online to print my newspaper, it was really quick and easy and I'm pleased with the result.

Finished Motion Piece!
I have finally finished my motion piece! One thing ticked off my list for deadline!Through the Viewfinder is an exploration into photographic processes and the development of technology. The project focuses on looking at ways to change traditional photographic methods into digital pieces. The experiment shows a documentary being played from a laptop through four different lenses to show the transition from traditional cameras to digital.

Obscura Experiment
Yesterday I took my Dora the explorer camera obscura tent to St Andrews Park to test it out. It was a horrible experience being cooped up in the tiniest tent in complete darkness! Anyone's worst nightmare really! Suffering for my work!
Alice and Ellie helped me out and taped me inside until it was completely light proof then opened up the pinhole. It was amazing inside, so bright, I could see the whole park projected inside the walls of the tent. I got Alice to make shapes for me to photograph but I had a disaster with my digital camera inside and couldn't find the right setting.
The longer I was inside and the more frustrated and hot I was getting the worse the camera worked! After about 20 minutes I gave up and had to burst out, coming away with another load of black images.. another black squares project on the way maybe..?? Will have to test this out again, but really not looking forward to getting back inside!

Dora the Obscura
Today I built my camera obscura tent. This started to become a very expensive project so I ended up going to Toys 'R' Us and getting the cheapest dora the explorer toddler tent. It turned out it didn't have a bottom so spent quite a long time today sewing and sticking it all together.
Nine hours later my tent was light proof. Its a pretty tight squeeze, but both Ellie and I managed to fit inside. I have made a complete mess of the living room now though! Need to take my tent outside in the next few days to see if it will work.

Motion in a single Pinhole Image
Another strand of my self directed study is trying to create motion in a single image. This has stemmed from my '1 hour pinhole' project where I tried to condense a film into a single image. I wanted to recreate this project looking at interactions with cameras.
Below is the experiment I photographed using my pinhole can cameras. To create motion in the single photograph I asked different people to look at my roliflex camera and figure out how to use it. This was successful and I ended up with ghostly photographs of the figures moving with the roliflex camera.

Another strand of my self directed study is trying to create motion in a single image. This has stemmed from my 'One hour pinhole' project where I tried to condense a film into a single image. I wanted to recreate this project looking at interactions with cameras.
Below are the digital versions of this experiment, I have also created the same effect using pinhole photography. I photographed different people experimenting with my roliflex camera and layered the images on top of each other to create motion in a single image.
It is interesting to see where the different movements create ghostly shadows. The photograph in the middle is very focused around the roliflex camera, as Alice moved around it during the exposures, Where as the top photo has more of a solid outline of Ellie, as she moved the roliflex camera more to look at it during the exposures.

Viewfinder Photos
I have continued my 'Through the Viewfinder' project for my self directed study. I photographed my motion piece today and am in the process of editing and animating. Watch this space for the finished motion piece.
