Medium Format Pinhole Camera - Kelly Angood

I love this 'do-it-yourself' cardboard pinhole camera from London based photographer Kelly Angood. The design replicates the look of a twin-lens reflex medium format camera and comes in a flat pack kit. I have experimented with assembling handmade pinhole cameras before from paper templates and was never very successful with the pinhole photographs. The paper was always too delicate and would often rip. This new camera Videre however is screen printed onto thick recycled cardboard and looks much more sturdy.

You can follow the projects process on the Tumblr page.

itv3 Papercut Idents

Since revealing the new itv rebrand in January this year, the broadcaster's have created new papercut idents for itv3. I love the new itv design and I am so excited for the new crafted idents.

Tundra has collaborated with Andersen M Studio to create these beautiful animations. Combining illustration, animation, paper cutting, model making, photography and compositing the animation on computer after, the project shows an incredible amount of work from a huge team of creatives. Each ident represents a different genre of programming on itv3.

The concept behind the bell jars came from itv's head of creative for broadcast, Tony Pipes. He wanted to represent itv3 as the 'curator of great well-crafted drama' so wanted this to translate into hand crafted idents.

Some of the pieces have a Christmas theme, which means they probably wont air on tv for quite some time. You can see videos with examples of the idents and behind the scenes below.

I have been following the work of Andersen M Studio for some time, and I am so excited by this new project. To see other work of theirs see here, here and here. Also have a look at their website.

You can find more work from Tundra on their website.

Rachael Ashe - Paper Cut Sculptures

Lovely paper sculptures from artist Rachael Ashe. It is really interesting to see the way she has explored free standing sculptures as opposed to flat paper cuts. The lighting in the photographs is beautiful, and the shadows cast really emphasize the delicacy of the structures.
"I’m trying to work out how to make interesting structures from paper that can support themselves when most of the material has been removed. The paper cutting makes a big difference to the integrity of the piece, how it holds together, and its ability to stand."
You can see more of Rachel Ashe's paper cutting on her flikr site.

The Paper Cut Project - Amazing Paper Hairpieces

The Paper Cut project is Atlanta based artists Amy Flurry and Nikki Nye (formerly Nikki Salk), who aim to transform paper into unique and outstanding wigs. This includes amazing 18th century hairpieces, which seem to defy gravity and rise to incredible heights. I love paper sculpture and Amy and Nikki's work shows such depth and detail.

"Our custom-made paper art installations are fuled by a love of fashion and an appreciation of the grace and nuance of this humble material."

Their work is very popular all over the world and the duo have exhibited and presented work in New York, the V&A in London and Italian Vogue! I wish I'd had the chance to go and see their work for myself at the V&A's Hollywood Costume exhibition last month! I will definitely be keeping my eye out for their work in the future.

You can see more of The Paper Cut project's hairpieces and masks on their website.

Castle on the Ocean - Wataru Itou

This incredible paper castle is the work of Japanese art student Wataru Itou. He exhibited his stunning creation in 2009 in Tokyo which shows a complete city, with lights and even a working rollercoaster train!

The piece took over four years to make, showing us how beautiful paper architecture can be when you have the patience. We can really appreciate the intricacy and extreme detail Wataru Itou had put into a structure like this.  I wish I had the opportunity to go and see this amazing piece in person!

Su Blackwell's Paper Cut Fairytales

I love finding creative work within book art, and have recently come across Su Blackwell's detailed paper cut fairytales. She has created and exhibited stunning sculptures and illustrated her own book of fairytales, 'The Fairytale Princess'. The book is a collection of seven fairy tales, which include Sleeping Beauty, Rapunzel and Snow White. The characters and stories emerge from the pages with a series of stunning paper cut illustrations.

"I often work within the realm of fairy-tales and folk-lore. I began making a series of book-sculpture, cutting-out images from old books to create three-dimensional diorama’s, and displaying them inside wooden boxes. The magic and otherworldliness of traditional fairytale collections meet glorious, contemporary paper constructions."

Many of Su's pieces include vulnerable characters, which are surrounded by the haunting and overpowering trees. I really like the delicate shadows created in the photography of the books, which enhances the fragile characters.

Paper Cuts

Really beautiful series of 'Paper Cuts' by french artist Anastasia Elias. The scenes have been cut into toilet rolls using different layers. The lighting used in the photographs really show the depth of the cut outs. I am very interested in paper art and I love Anastasia's attention to detail in this series.

You can see more of her work online here www.anastassia-elias.com.
